A Concise Guide to San Diego County's Wine Country

This is a collection all in one place for information on all wineries (we are aware of) in San Diego County. I created this because I did not find one complete list anywhere. For wineries without tasting rooms we will look for retail locations. Support your local businesses. Have fun, assign a designated driver.

We have tried to make the information as reliable as possible, but operations may change, call ahead of time to confirm operating hours. We have no affiliations with any of the organizations listed here. All trademarks belong to their respective owners.

The bigest "secret" in San Diego's wine industry is the rapid emergence of many fine vineyards and wineries in the Ramona Valley area. In fact, the Ramona Valley has obtained official federal designation as an American Viticultural Area as of January 2006, which recognized the area for its distinctive microclimate, elevation, and soil attributes. This is only the third AVA to be recognized in Southern California (south of Santa Barbara) after San Pasqual Valley and Temecula Valley.

The "tasting notes" below are only intended to give you some indications of the range of varietals available from our local wineries. Everyone has their own unique interaction with fine wines, and we strongly encourage you to go out and sample these for yourself.

Visited 05dec10 - they are now "official" after getting the new fast-track county license approval. Rosa and Gerry were on vacation, but we were warmly welcomed by their son and family. We were honored to witness a marriage proposal (and acceptance!). Pizza was available from the outside wood burning oven. Gerry is continuing to build - new construction is destined to be a new aging cellar, an entertainment center, and wine processing facility. Favorites from the samplings were the Cab Franc and the Tempranillo.

Comments: visited on 08sep07 A beautiful location high on a hillside just 5 miles East of I-15. Winemaker Geraldo "Gerry' Cordiano and wife Rosa will welcome you to their little piece of heaven. A vineyard on the property provides several estate-bottled varieties. All his wines are 100% varietal yet very well balanced. The Cab Franc 04 is very robust, perhaps with a bit of an edge and might use some more time in the bottle. The Cab Sav 05 was excellent, very smooth. The Syrah was also excellent, bold and earthy almost like an old vine zin. The Tempranillo was made from purchased grapes, with a very fruity refreshing start and a nice acid/tannin finish. The grounds are still being finished, towards a grand opening possibly in Novenber. But they already have a large patio with a great view, with an outside custom cooking area including a pizza oven. This is available for private parties.
Dec07: They escaped damage from the fires. They offered a new release of 05 Merlot. We took the bottle home and shared with friends several days later. All of us rated this excellent.

Comments: Met the owners at La Jolla Art and Wine festival 11oct09. All the samples I tasted were done in a more restrained style, not overly big and oaky. This includes the reds as well as the Chardonnay and the very nice, dry, white Cab Sav. Very reasonable prices as well. The reds have a unique character, but well worth a try if you can catch them at a tasting.

Comments: We visited on 23jan08, after having their 2002 South Coast Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon at the Pala Mesa resort Aquaterra restaurant (it was excellent, as was the food). We thought all the varieties were very good to excellent, and we brought home several bottles.
The current owners used "Pepper Lane" as their name initially, until they were assured full rights to the Fallbrook name.

Comments: Visited here on 05dec10. It is a pretty building, on the hillside with a great view. Tony is extremely passionate about winemaking and his wines, and gives a great explanation of his winemaking philosophy and how he creates his wines. All are estate grown, all are processed on site carefully and in small quantities. The tour included sampling from several barrels of aging wine. As the reds are unfiltered, they all age an extra year in oak for settling, and the Cab Sav gets an extra year. We thought all the samples were excellent, our favorites were the Cab Franc, Cab Sav, and Cab-Merlot blend.

Met Tony Tiso at La Jolla Art & Wine festival 11oct09. Tasted 2004 Cab Sav-Merlot, 2005 Cab Sav, and 2006 Cab Franc - all were excellent. Intense flavors, well balanced, and unfiltered.

Comments: This is local to us, and we hang out with friends almost every Sunday late afternoon. They make a variety of white, red, rose, and port. The petite syrah is probably the most robust red, but everything else is very good also.
18jul07 Bien Nacido chardonnay was our favorite white. 2004 Estate Ambassodor's Reserve Merlot was very good, and the California Tawny Port is very special. They gave us a barrel sample of the 2005 Reserve Merlot, this has excellent prospects.

Comments: visited 02sep07, a nice drive into San Diego back country. The Viognier and Old Gus Blend [named in honor of the property's original owner] were good. The Carignane 05, Merlot 04, Cab Sav 04, and Syrah 04 were all Excellent, and I believe all are 100% varietal. The Variations 05 is a blend with a second partial malo-lactic fermentation giving a very light spritz on the tounge. The Muscat was very nice, not too sweet. They have a sparkling wine which was also very good.

Comments: visited on 01sep07. The owner of T&H, Jacob Kappeler, owns land in San Marcos, and has a neighbor and together they grow grapes and run a winery, and the tasting room is here. They sample and offer for sale a number of other San Diego wines (e.g. J. Jenkins, San Pasqual, Hacienda de las Rosas), but the focus is of course on their own wines. Cabernet Sav 2004 very nice, although a touch of brown in my sample. The Syrah 2002 was excellent, great nose, color, and balance. Sunset Red (60% Syrah, 40% Cab Sav) was very smooth, easy drinking. The Syrenade was their newest release, 80% Syrah and 20% Viogener a very interesting blend we have only seen once before. The Vignoier was also very nice.
